Uppsala Cathedral Boys’ Choir is the oldest of its kind in Sweden. It was founded in 1920 on the initiative of Nobel Peace Prize winner and Archbishop Nathan Söderblom. During his travels in Europe, Archbishop Söderblom was inspired by boys’ choirs in Germany and therefore felt that Sweden too should have a boys’ choir.

The formation of the choir was made possible thanks to several donations, the largest coming from Sally von Bahr. She was present at the first performance of the boys’ choir in the Cathedral at a morning service on 21st November, 1920.

In the 1970s the boys’ choir came under the royal patronage of His Majesty Gustav VI Adolf. At that time the tradition of the popular Christmas/St. Lucia & and the star boys concert “Goder afton, mitt herrskap” began. Several pieces have been dedicated to the choir, the most famous being “Jesu Corona Celsior”, composed by Otto Olsson in 1927.

Uppsala Cathedral Boys’ Choir has about 75 members, of whom about 50 are members of the concert choir. The choir sings regularly at services in the cathedral and gives concerts. Several tours in Europe have been undertaken, and in 2010 the boys toured in the United States. In June 2008, the trebles and altos participated in sold out performances of an Uppsala University production of Puccini's “Tosca”.
